How the Photographs were Selected
All of the photographs on this web site were taken by Ferrater Mora
at various times, with the exception of the photographs of Ferrater Mora
himself and of his medals and the wedding photograph of Maximiliano
Ferrater Cull and Carmen Mora Sindreu.
Reversing the order that one might expect, Ferrater Mora started
taking (still) photographs only after he had mastered the techniques
involved in filming movies. A few of his photographs are photographs of
a single frame from one of his films. Most of his photographs are in
color. While he "supervised" the enlargements he had made, he
did not develop any of his own photographs.
The photographs taken by Ferrater Mora are too many and too varied to
be easily categorized in any but the most simplistic manner. Ferrater
himself organized them in terms of their subject matter: trees, boats,
animals, people, and so forth. Despite their varied subject matter,
Ferrater Mora's photographs reveal a characteristic or personal
style.
The selection of the photographs reproduced here was somewhat
arbitrary and subjective. The primary criterion for the selection of the
photographs was to choose a reasonable number from among those already
enlarged on the assumption that Ferrater enlarged those he particularly
liked. To facilitate reproduction on the web site, the previously framed
photographs and the poster sized enlargements were excluded from
consideration as were the hundreds or perhaps thousands of 35 mm and
Hasselblad slides, despite the fact that Ferrater rejoiced in the sharp
detail of the latter slides. One has to conclude, then, that it is quite
possible that the photographs reproduced on this site are not
necessarily the best ones taken by Ferrater Mora.
